Please note, our oilcloth fabric is phthalate-free. Here is some information directly from Marimekko:
PVC, with which the oilcloth is coated, is an inherently hard plastic material which usually requires the addition of a plasticiser. The plasticisers most commonly used to soften PVC are called phthalates. Because of possible effects of exposure, a concentration limit has been set for certain phthalates in toys and children articles.
Although Marimekko´s oilcloth has been proven completely safe, the coating material was changed for phthatale-free PVC at the beginning of 2008. This also applies to ready-made oilcloth products, such as place mats. Children´s bibs and all acrylic-coated products are also phthalate-free. The change does not affect the properties of the oilcloth.
